Liveaboard Diving in the Maldives

maldives-liveaboardLiveaboard diving in the Maldives is some of the best in South Asia – and honestly, some of the best in the world! The Scuba Travel International Team researches and pre-screens dive operations extensively before we book our customers with them, and let us tell you: there are liveaboard experiences that are just not-so-great.

Not so in the Maldives! As an example, our recent inspection of the Ark Royal revealed spacious cabins, with a lounge so large it took our breath away. Not only do you have up to four opportunities per day to explore the pristine waters of the Maldives – where manta rays are common sightings, sharks are often found, and large schools of colorful fish that can only be seen in this region flash by the healthy, vibrant coral reefs – but later, if you wish, you have a comfortable setting with which to connect with others who share your passion for travel, diving and adventure! These meetings can (and have) led to friendships that last a lifetime – and isn’t that the best sort of souvenir – connecting with like minded travelers on life’s highway?

Prefer some solitude? Take in the view from the deck, or luxuriate under the skilled hands of a masseuse. Retreat to your cabin and enjoy a movie – or simply revel in knowing that life’s pressures and responsibilities are on a far distant shore. Those who like to always be available will find comfort in knowing that cell service is available throughout the region. Smart phones and lap tops can access the internet for a nominal fee—so it’s super easy to let your Facebook friends know what a great time you’re having liveaboard diving in the Maldives!

You’re Booking that Dive Trip and Excitement is Building: Are YOU Ready?

If you have taken a recess from diving, there are many ways to get ready!

Inactive-DiverWe understand that many of you are busy…really busy! So, when we suggest you jump in your local stores and “shake down” your dive gear, you respond “yeah right!”

It was all you could do to drop your bag off at your local SDI facility and ask them to “check this out… I’m going diving!” So you know your scuba gear WILL be ready, but will you?

Here is a quick and painless suggestion as to how to get ready.

Visit https://www.tdisdi.com and check out which online course peaks your interest? Sign up and take it as a primer to get you thinking, and yes reflecting, on your upcoming adventure.

Once you arrive at your dive destination, come clean! Trust me, it won’t be the first time they’ve heard, ”I’ve been busy…” Don’t worry when you get started the words will come to you!

Once you get in the water take advantage of a simple shake down dive. If your buddy is not coming with you set your expectations high and team up with the most active diver in the group. Notice I said most active NOT highest certified… that person may be in the same boat as you (yes, pun intended).

Even if you are an ex-Olympic Swimmer, ease back into your diving. NEVER EVER try to pick right back up where you left off…unless you have done so through continuing education.

Go Get Wet …have FUN and tell your friends all about it! There is no better way to develop a larger circle of diving buddies!

Diving Instructor Trainer Workshop at SDI’s World Headquarters

SDI-ITW
From Left to Right: Erika Richard, Jill Dewey, Yuri Issac, Chip Petersen, Al Anzuoni, Uwe Rath, Andrew Haley, Dev Spradlin, Darren Pace, Gary Jenkins, Amanda Smith and Chelcy Elliot

International Training, parent company of SDI™, TDI™ and ERDI™ held their highest level certification course, Instructor Training Workshop at their world headquarters in Jensen Beach, FL the week of April 23, 2012.

Dennis Pulley, a member of SDI’s training department stated, “It was an absolute pleasure working with such a diverse group of divers. We had instructors from Belize, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Boston and the Carolinas come in for our latest Diving Instructor Trainer workshop. Not only did we pack the 7 days with extensive scuba training, we shared stories, laughs and we all gained a greater understanding and respect for the underwater world of diving.”

The Instructor Trainer Rating is International Training’s highest teaching level and the program focuses on development of evaluation techniques in the classroom, confined water and open water. Presentation ability and skill demonstrations at instructor trainer quality are also assessed throughout the program. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may teach instructor level courses for all approved SDI™, TDI™ and ERDI™ levels, including conducting the IEC portion of the SDI Open Water SCUBA Diver Instructor Course. The course is intense and challenging but very rewarding. Interested in participating? Anyone wishing to receive further information about future ITW programs should contact the HQ Training Department at training@tdisdi.com.

Diving Bailout Options – and the NEED!

Does your team carry a redundant air source on every dive mission? If your answer is no, this article is for you. We can’t stress enough the importance of this, carrying a redundant air source could be the difference between life and death for your teammate.

Swift Water – The Need for Training

That water YOU are getting ready to enter is moving faster than you think!

swift-waterSpring is here and anyone that lives near a river knows that means snow melt, rain and fast moving waters. Spring is also followed by summer which brings water sports such as: rafting, kayaking and swimming to name a few. So what does all this have to do with swift water? Put people close to water and they are bound to get themselves in trouble. So the question really is are you and your team ready to render assistance with limited risk to your team?

Swift water rescues are nothing new to Public Safety Diving (PSD) teams but team members change, teams get dissolved and new teams form; it is important to reflect on the qualifications and experience of the team overall and make an honest assessment of the types of calls you are prepared to respond to. Along with the team members, the equipment at your disposal needs to be checked to ensure it too is ready for the task. Swift water involves a lot of equipment: lines, block and tackle, carabineers and other items. All these items are subject to wear and tear and need to be inspected prior to needing them for training or a real call out.

Training for this type of rescue can be grueling, but never the less it’s mandatory if these types of rescues could happen in your response area.

Typically when we think of swift water rescues, we think about the recent news coverage about a flood from heavy rains and “that person” who was swept in.

The ERDI Swift Water Level 1 course teaches responders the techniques and tools they need to render assistance to those in need. The course also covers the limits of swift water rescues and risk vs. benefit analysis.

Do yourself, your team and the community a favor: if you are trained to respond to these events, be prepared and run some training exercises. If you are not, go to https://www.tdisdi.com and search for an ERDI Swift Water Instructor in your area.

TDI rEvo CCR Instructor Course and First TDI rEvo CCR Diver Course in Australia

Takes place at Mount Gambier

It was a big week for new CCR divers Ryan Kaczkowski and Samuel Vermey as they began their rEvo course being taught by rEvo instructor trainee Rubens Monaco.

Having already completed a rEvo diver crossover and then assisted on a full rEvo course with renowned CCR instructor Marc Crane last November, Rubens was now running a full rEvo CCR course under the watchful eyes of rEvo company owner and TDI Instructor Trainer Paul Raymaekers.

Ryan and Samuel had both purchased brand new rEvo Micro FT’s with the new rEvo Monitoring System through our Australian distributor Damien Grigg of DKG Drysuits. Damien personally delivered the units to Mount Gambier for the boys along with other essential equipment to ensure that the course ran smoothly so far away from home.

The hours of the course were long with 6am wakeups and most nights all were still up till 10pm finishing theory. The instructors took great pleasure in having two very enthusiastic students who did not grizzle about the long hours. In fact, they were both so excited about diving on their new toys that they would have stayed up half the night as well if needed!

The course consisted of various theory sessions which were spread out over the five days. There was a long confined water pool session which was completed at the Mt Gambier Aquatic Centre. The open water dives were completed in Gouldens Pond, Little Blue Hole, Kilsbys Hole and one very nice last dive in the world famous Piccannine Ponds.

It was a huge bonus to have the man who made the unit be present throughout the course. The wealth of knowledge which Paul has about his unit was well absorbed by both students and instructor throughout the course. The one aspect about Paul’s presence during the course was that he is truly passionate about his unit. This is not only reflected in the way he talks about the rEvo, but also in the way that he likes rEvo instructors to train divers on his unit. When you combined both TDI standards and rEvo standards into one course, it really does make for a challenging week of knowledge and skill development.

In the end, a big congratulations to Ryan and Samuel for completing their course. We also now have a rEvo Instructor in Australia, and Rubens can be contacted at any time if you have questions about rEvo units or want to book in on a course. A massive thank you to Paul Raymaekers and Marc Crane for traveling to Australia to help run this course. Their assistance and training will hold us in good stead to make sure that this unit flourishes in Australia. Thanks to Michelle, Troy and Sean from TDI for their support throughout the planning stages of the course. Also, a special thanks to Damien Grigg who without his behind the scenes help, this course would not have happened.

If anyone would like any information about rEvo CCR’s or training on this unit, Rubens Monaco can be contacted at info@idcscuba.com.au or mobile 0413-429-533.
