Use of video debriefs is becoming increasingly popular. It was initially adopted by tech instructors but is now increasingly common with recreational instructors. The introduction of personal action cameras and especially hands free cameras has also encouraged the use of video as a teaching tool.

Video debriefs can be very effective and can be a great addition to your teaching toolkit but the use iof a video camera also has a number of significant disadvantages which need to be taken into account.

In this talk we will cover the advantages and pitfalls and give solid advice on how you can make the most of video debriefs while at the same time avoiding the common pitfalls.

What’s your Exit Strategy? Get tips on how to sell your business profitably.

What:  Seminar Presentation
Date: Thursday 11/14/19
Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Where: W307BC
Who: Brian Carney
Description: Ideally, an entrepreneur will develop an exit strategy in their initial business plan before actually going into business. The choice of exit plan can influence business development decisions. Common types of exit strategies include initial public offerings (IPO), strategic acquisitions and management buyouts (MBO). Which exit strategy an entrepreneur chooses depends on many factors, such as how much control or involvement (if any) they want to retain in the business and whether they want the company to continue to run in the same way or are willing to see it change going forward as long as they are paid a fair price for his ownership share. A strategic acquisition, for example, will relieve the founder of his or her ownership responsibilities, but will also mean giving up control. Come find out more valuable information about how to plan a strategy to exit your business.

Diving to Save the World – How participating in Project Baseline can help restore and preserve the type of world we want to live in.

What:  Seminar Presentation
Date: Friday 11/15/19
Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Where: W307BC
Who: Todd Kincaid, Ph.D.
Description:
There used to be so much more coral.” “There used to be so many more fish.” “The water used to be so clear.” These are all too frequent comments common to discussions with anyone having dived for a decade or more, regardless of the dive site being discussed. As more and more new divers enter the water, who, as amazed by their first encounters with the underwater world as the divers before them, assume that what they’re seeing marks the normal or even pristine condition, our collective memory of the truly pristine, our baselines for quality, are continuously eroded. Stopping this process of shifting baselines is our mission.

Project Baseline is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization engaging divers and snorkelers to record change in the world’s underwater environments and to work with others to preserve our natural and cultural treasures. Our mission is a Call to Action for all divers to become the voice for the underwater world that we love but too often take for granted. We’ve engaged nearly 300 divers to document sites in oceans, lakes, rivers, and springs in 43 countries. Together, we’ve conducted over 7,500 dives and contributed >3,400 pictures and nearly 57,000 temperature readings to our web-accessible public domain database while collaborating with academic, government, and conservation entities to foster ongoing monitoring and research programs. To succeed though, we need support and participation from vastly more of the roughly 6 million divers and 20 million snorkelers currently active across the world. We need You to speak up for your underwater backyard, to apply your unique access to the largest part of our planet that such a tiny fraction of humanity will ever get to see for themselves, to the growing global effort to restore and preserve it – for ourselves, and for all who come after us.

Come to our talk. Learn about our mission, the environmental problems we’re helping to solve, and most importantly, learn how You can help to Save the World – or at least – RESTORE & PRESERVE THE TYPE OF WORLD WE WANT TO LIVE IN.
