ERD Instructor Trainer

This program trains candidates to conduct the ERDI Instructor Course. In addition, ERDI Instructor Trainers are qualified to conduct the ERDI Non-Diving Ops Instructor Course and Ops Instructor ratings for ERDI Instructors. A corresponding, current instructor level rating must be held for all IT levels, along with minimum student certifications as detailed in this outline. During this course, you will work directly with the headquarters staff presenting and evaluating various subjects such as: methods of instruction, dive leader risk management, the business of scuba diving, as well as teaching technical instructor level courses.

Who this course is for:

  • This course is designed for individuals that wish to teach qualified public safety divers “How to Teach” public safety diving activities

Course prerequisites:

    • Minimum age 21
    • Provide proof of 200 logged dives
    • Active ERDI/SDI Instructor or equivalent (and a recreational scuba instructor), for a minimum of 2 years with no quality assurance issues for the past 12 months
    • Have issued a minimum of 200 ERDI/SDI (or equivalent) diver certifications at various levels (Suggested levels as defined below):
      • 100 open water scuba diver
      • 50 public safety divers
      • 20 rescue diver
      • 25 specialty diver
      • 5 Divemaster or Assistant Instructor

*NOTE: A minimum of 50 of the required student certifications must be ERDI/SDI unless authorized in writing by ERDI Headquarters Training Department prior to course commencement.

  • Provide proof of current CPR, first aid and oxygen provider, where local law permits
  • Have a current medical examination for scuba diving signed by a licensed physician
  • Staff at least 1 instructor development course (IDC)

Some of the required skills you will have to demonstrate include:

Pool/Confined water

  • Perform, to demonstration quality, one complete rescue scenario
  • Perform a 10 minute survival-float, without the use of swimming aids
  • Complete a 400 metre swim on the surface, non-stop, any stroke, without the use of swimming aids, in less than 10 minutes; swim goggles permitted
  • Complete a 800 metre swim with mask, snorkel, and fins non-stop without the use of arms in less than 17 minutes
  • Bring a diver, simulating unconsciousness, up from depth, not greater than 6 metres/20 feet; at the surface swim them 100 metres in less than 4 minutes
  • Candidates must perform , to demonstration quality, all open water diver skills
  • Pool/confined water problem solving

Open Water

  • Candidates must perform, to demonstration quality, all open water diver skills
  • One rescue demonstration
  • Open water problem solving
  • Present, at an instructor trainer quality, a minimum of:
    • Two diver level academic presentations
    • Three instructor level academic presentations
    • Two diver level confined water presentations
    • Two diver level open water presentations
  • Evaluate a minimum of:
    • Two diver level academic presentations
    • Three instructor level academic presentations
    • Two instructor level confined water presentations
    • Two instructor level open water presentations
  • Demonstrate mature and sound judgment concerning student coaching and evaluating

  • Conduct the ERDI Non-Diving Ops Instructor Course
  • Instructor Trainers may staff Instructor Trainer Workshops
  • Conduct ERDI Crossover Programs for qualified individuals
  • Certify ERDI Instructors to teach ERDI Diving Ops* for which they hold instructor ratings

*NOTE: Certain Ops Instructor ratings are subject to minimum student numbers being met before IT status is granted, as shown below:

Confined Space – 10 students certified
Dry Suit Ops – 10 students certified
Full Face Mask Ops – 10 students certified
Hull Inspection Ops – 20 students certified
Ice Diving Ops – 25 students certified
Ice Surface Rescue Ops – 10 students certified
Night Ops – 10 students certified
Rapid Water Ops – 20 students certified
Small Boat Ops – 10 students certified
Underwater Crime Scene Investigation Ops – 15 students certified
Underwater Explosives Recovery Ops – 40 students certified
Underwater Threat Assessment Ops – 10 students certified

*Note: Unless otherwise specified, a minimum of 10 students must be certified at that level, before an individual may request an upgrade to the Instructor Trainer level.

ERDI Instructor Trainer minimum requirements:

  • Successfully complete the ERDI Instructor Trainer pre-course study package which includes:
    • Written Standards and Procedures Exam
    • Online OWSDI Course
    • Online Professional Familiarization (crossover) course
  • Successfully pass the ERDI Instructor Trainer written exam with a minimum score of 80 percent and a 100 percent remediation by the conducting
