GENERAL NOTICES:

Registrations.  Members are reminded that in order to ensure rapid processing of diver and leadership level registrations, they must be submitted to the correct office, as follows:

  • Diver Level.  Submitted to the Administrative or Regional Office where the instructor is registered.
  • Leadership Level.  Submitted to the Administrative or Regional Office which covers the country where the candidate being certified resides.

Registrations submitted to an incorrect office will not be processed and will be returned to the Instructor/Instructor Trainer, resulting in the certification being delayed.  A list of Regional Offices and the countries they administer is available via https://www.tdisdi.com on the ‘Contact Us’ page.  If a country is not listed, members should contact International Training HQ for information.

Leadership Level Crossover.  Current documentation, including a price list (for North America) checklist and guidelines, for Instructor Trainers and IT Staff Instructors conducting leadership level crossovers is available in the Members’ Area of https://www.tdisdi.com.  In order to ensure rapid and problem-free approval and processing of crossover documentation when submitted to the HQ Training Dept, it is important that all guidelines are followed carefully.

Members should note that a certification credit is not available when crossing over a professional from another agency, however, it is perfectly acceptable for the conducting member to charge for the time taken in the crossover/familiarization process.  The exception to this is if a refresher/update is required by the applicant – for instance if he/she has not been teaching for over two years.  Only in such cases, and only if the conducting IT/IT Staff Inst completes the required update/refresher, may an ‘assist’ credit be applied (update procedures and documentation normally used for existing members may be utilized in addition to crossover paperwork).

Where possible, crossover applicants should complete the SDI/TDI/ERDI Online Familiarization Course (currently only in English language).  Codes are available to members conducting crossovers from their regional office if the applicant has not already signed up online via www.sdi-onlinetraining.com (preferred method in North America).

Unique Specialty Outlines.  SDI, TDI and ERDI members considering creating a unique specialty are advised to contact the HQ Training Department initially.  Standards for numerous unique specialties are already held on file and, as many submissions are similar, one may already exist which meets the requirements of the potential applicant.  In such instances, verification of experience – in the same way as a regular SDI specialty, for example – may be all that is required for allocation of an existing unique rating.  Other specialties on file may require certain pre-requisites or the author’s permission prior to allocation.  If a unique specialty is not already available, an outline may be submitted to the HQ Training Department for review.  To expedite the review process, outlines should be submitted in the same format as the core ratings in current Standards & Procedures and include copies of any associated exams and a detailed summary of the applicant’s experience in the relevant activity.  Ideally, an electronic Word™ version of the outline should be made available to the Training Department.  Approval of a unique specialty outline is not guaranteed and members should note that additional supporting information may be required and the review process may take several weeks or longer.  If approved, the initial approval fee is currently $100.

SDI NOTICES:

Online Leadership Level Courses.  SDI’s online courses for knowledge development of DM, AI and OWSDI candidates are proving to be extremely popular.  Feedback from instructors and ITs suggests that the comprehensive information contained in the programs is preparing candidates extremely well for their leadership courses.  Current members who wish to receive a demonstration code for the level they are certified at should contact SDI HQ or their Regional Office.

A frequently asked question since introduction of the online programs is “do they replace the requirement for classroom work?” and, more specifically “does online learning replace the IDC and can a candidate go straight to IEC?”.  The answer to both questions is no.  The thrust behind development of online academics for leadership level programs is the same as the diver level programs which have been available for several years now.  Online training does not replace the need for classroom work; it does however, give the Instructor or IT a chance to apply what they would normally do in the classroom in a new way.  When using online training,

an instructor can monitor the progress of the candidates, send them emails or call them to discuss problems, answer questions, etc.  When candidates complete the academics online, they are essentially cutting out the ‘fat.’ Doing so facilitates a more efficient interaction between the candidate and instructional staff in the classroom.
