Singapore ITW boasts Strong Candidates

…and a bright future for SDI/TDI in the region

Some time ago, Brian Carney, president of SDI/TDI/ERDI, mentioned in one of his letters to the membership that our agency was no longer a North American company. He went on to explain that what he meant by that statement was that we had just reached a tipping point and more than half of our membership numbers and more than 50 percent of our business interest was coming from “overseas.” During the intervening years, Brian’s statement has become more and more appropriate. Certainly one of the strongest growth areas for our company and the recreational dive market is South East Asia.

This was underlined in early October when HQ Staff joined regional manager Alex Yeo in Singapore to host a very successful instructor-trainer workshop for five experienced candidates from the region.

An ITW is a multi-day “challenging sweatshop” where candidates (and staff) are thoroughly put through the wringer. The intensive classroom, confined water, and open water sessions are designed to run individual instructors through SDI/TDI/ERDI protocols and procedures for certifying new instructors for the agencies (from open-water to advanced trimix in some cases, based of course, on individual qualifications).

All five local candidates worked extremely hard, putting in long days and evenings (sometimes into the early morning), learning the ropes, and working through various challenges the staff threw at them.

Successful IT and Staff IT candidates were:

  • Theunis van Niekerk (Hong Kong),
  • Ahmat bin Rahmat (Malaysia),
  • Elvin Ang Chee Wee (Singapore),
  • Parasu Komaradat (Thailand), and
  • Spencer Wong (Singapore)

“It was a pleasure to work with this group,” said Steve Lewis, HQ staff member who represented the company at the ITW. “To a person, they are a credit to the SDI and TDI brands, and we believe they present to the dive community the perfect balance of experience and enthusiasm that SDI and TDI looks for in its IT team. We wish them all the very best of luck and many thanks.”

When you are ready to proceed to the next level and ultimately accept the challenge of earning and becoming a coveted IT for SDI/TDI/ERDI reach out to the Training Department to start making plans now. The counseling services from the Training Division are invaluable!
