The SDI Air Fill Station Technician course
Article by Brian Shreve
Imagine this scenario if you will. You are working at your local dive center. The owner has stepped away from the store for a moment, leaving you as the only employee there. A diver walks in carrying their scuba cylinder and asks you for a fill. You just started last week, and have seen tanks filled, but never have done it yourself.
You decide to go ahead and try to fill the cylinder so the customer can be served. Despite hooking up hoses and opening all the valves, you can only seem to get the cylinder filled part way with air. What went wrong?
The Time To Learn Is Now!!
Time for you to take the SDI Air Fill Station Technician course! This course is designed to teach dive center employees and those scuba divers with their own compressor systems how to safely fill cylinders with air. During the course, you will learn about managing the risks and hazards associated with working around and filling compressed gas cylinders.
You will learn safe operation of an air fill station, including air quality factors and air analysis, along with proper handling and filling of cylinders. This course builds the foundation for other technician courses such as the TDI gas blender courses and SDI VIP Inspector. The required materials for the course are either the SDI VIP Inspector manual or eLearning course.
Meet Local and/or Industry Standards
The Air Fill Station Technician course offers recurrent training to meet local or industry requirements as well. In many jurisdictions, any employee who handles compressed gas cylinders must have recurrent, function-specific training. This course was also designed to meet those requirements. And with the flexibility of SDI standards, instructors can add any local information specific to those requirements.
Safety Is Key
If you’re currently working within the dive industry, thinking about the dive industry as a profession, or operate a breathing air compressor for yourself, a club, a university, fire or police department, or other entity, this course may be critical in ensuring you maintain safe practices and meet local requirements.
Already An Instructor??
If you’re an SDI Open Water instructor, you can easily qualify to teach this course, provided you can document your experience operating a fill station.
