Top Dive Locations in Cozumel
Palancar Reef

Santa Rosa Wall
A swift drift-dive site featuring steep walls plunging into the depths. Divers here often glide effortlessly alongside coral reefs and large marine animals, which can be seen approaching the reef from the deep water beyond.
C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl Wreck
Originally a Mexican Navy minesweeper, the C-53 wreck now serves as an artificial reef packed with marine life. This dive offers epic conditions and is suitable for divers comfortable with moderate depths and enclosed spaces.
Punta Tunich
Known for its strong currents, Punta Tunich delivers drift dives over colorful reefs bustling with ocean creatures. This dive is perfect for experienced divers who enjoy effortless navigation of the underwater landscapes.
Columbia Shallows
Ideal for beginners and freedivers, Columbia Shallows typically has calm, clear waters and rich biodiversity. Its shallow depth and diverse marine life give an excellent environment for underwater photography and leisurely exploration.
Marine Life in Cozumel
Cozumel’s waters are full of marine life, some of my favorite animals here include:
- Sea Turtles: Green and hawksbill turtles frequently appear around reef areas and cleaning stations.
- Eagle Rays: Majestic and graceful, eagle rays glide elegantly over sandy bottoms and along reef walls.
- Moray Eels: Peeking from coral crevices, moray eels of many types add intrigue to reef explorations.
- Barracuda: Barracuda of all sizes can be seen patrolling the coral reefs. During one dive I entered a small coral cave, only to find a massive barracuda already hanging out in there. I slowly turned around and let him enjoy the casa.
- Mantis Shrimp: Spotted in their holes in sandy patches or seafloor, these shrimp are endlessly fascinating. Watching their complex alien-like eyes as they check you out will make any dive a good one.
Freediving in Cozumel

Accommodations on Cozumel range from luxurious resorts to cozy, budget-friendly hotels and short-term rentals. The island’s main town of San Miguel provides good dining, shopping, and cultural opportunities. Renting scooters is a fun way to get around the island, or easily get a cab. Check out the Mayan ruins when you have a day off from diving.
Getting to Cozumel
Cozumel is conveniently accessible via a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen on the mainland. Travelers arriving through Cancun International Airport can get to the island with a drive and a ferry in around two hours. Regular ferry services make it easy to plan stress free.
