Bob Collins: SDI Instructor Trainer Ambassador

Hi, I’m Bob Collins. I’m honored to be a part of the SDI Instructor Ambassador Program. I’m from Florida and I’ve been diving since 1968.

I live in Jacksonville, Fl. and wear a number of hats relating to the scuba industry. First I am the Director of Training for the Divers Supply Chain of Stores in the Southeast. I also serve as Director of Pro Development for EDGE-HOG Dive Gear’s line of products. Last, I produce two YouTube channels for both of these companies.

What was the first dive you did and how did it influence you to start a career in the diving industry?

In 1968 as a High School Senior my certification dives were at Ginne Springs, Florida. Shortly after I entered the US Navy and the combination began my life’s experience as a scuba diver.

What do you believe is the most important trait of a professional educator and why?

Being able to put yourself in your student’s booties and adapt your teaching to what works best for them.

What is your favorite SDI class to teach and why?

The Course Director program is my favorite to teach. Helping experienced instructors return to the basics of diving so it becomes an art form and not just a training evolution that they are passing along.

What is a bucket list dive you still have?

My ultimate dive vacation would be to Thailand and it’s many wonderful dive sites. Sail Rock known as Koh Tao, Koh Chang and of course the islands of Hin Daeng & Hin Muang.

What is one bit of advice you would give to a perspective Instructor candidate about to embark on becoming an SDI Instructor?

Your journey begins with you being able to open your ego and then to hone your diving skills to a fine edge. Be willing to accept criticism without becoming defensive about how you’ve taught skills in the past.
