Jason Lim: SDI Instructor Trainer Ambassador

Hi, I’m Jason Lim. I’m honored to be a part of the SDI Instructor Ambassador Program. I’m from Malaysia and I’ve been diving since 2003.

What was the first dive you did and how did it influence you to start a career in the diving industry?

2003 was my first Open Water course. The only word that sparked me into scuba diving activities until now “it was phenomenal” Sharing what I love most with my family and friends is to bring them along for the experience and the endless enjoyment. The more I learn the more I share. The moment I got my first Open Water c-card, there was no turning back.

What do you believe is the most important trait of a professional educator and why?

Most are lack of confidence to stand up, being reliable on agency and sheltered instead of doing it for themselves. Afraid of being scrutinized.

What is your favorite SDI class to teach and why?

A professional class can be the most challenging especially candidate from a varied professional background, be prepared to expect the unexpected question. But at the same time, we learn a lot sharing vast experience among us.

What is a bucket list dive you still have?

French Polynesia, Africa Sardin Run, Galapagos and a few cave systems around

What is one bit of advice you would give to a perspective Instructor candidate about to embark on becoming an SDI Instructor?

First of becoming instructor can be nightmare 🙂 (if you think is fun) but if you keep going on and continue the journey of your professional, you will be amazed at how much you have to gain that others can only dream of.

I was being questioned by many, why do I choose SDI instead, I seriously had no idea, but I believe whatever we do, whatever we choose, as long as we have the passion and set our goal, everything is possible. Believe in yourself.
