SDI Scubility Snorkel Course

The SDI Scubility Snorkel Course is designed to give physically disabled students the necessary skills to safely snorkel in conditions similar to their training without the direct supervision of an instructor.

Note: Snorkeling under the supervision of a qualified SDI Scubility Dive Buddy may be required for the individual.

Who this course is for:

  • The individual with mental or physical disabilities who wishes to become acquainted with the underwater world by snorkeling

Course prerequisites:

  • Minimum age 18, 8 with parental consent

  • Physics and physiology
    • Buoyancy
    • Pressure
    • Equalization Techniques
  • Snorkeling Equipment
    • Mask, fins, and snorkel
    • Exposure protection
    • Buoyancy compensator device

    • Dive flag
    • Rescue signal
    • Knife or cutting device
  • Planning your snorkel route
    • Diver fitness and overexertion
    • Buddy system
    • First aid

Some of the required skills you will have to demonstrate include:

  • Properly prepare, don, and adjust all snorkeling equipment
  • Perform a buddy check, and demonstrate good use of the buddy system
  • Safely conduct exits and entries either from land or boat; with minimum assistance if required
  • Achieve neutral buoyancy
  • Proper breathing and clearing of a snorkel
  • Swimming; proper use of fins or webbed gloves
  • Proper use of buoyancy compensator device (BCD)/snorkel vest
  • Surface dives
  • Proper use of hand signals
