SIX NEW INSTRUCTOR TRAINERS FROM WESTERN CANADA ITW IN POWELL RIVER

The recent Western Canada Instructor Trainer Workshop produced six successful candidates. Hosted by Alpha Dive & Kayak in Powell River, British Columbia, the program ran between 21st and 27th August and was conducted by Steve Moore from the HQ Training Department.
Candidates on the course were:
Scott Friesen from Alpha Dive & Kayak, British Columbia (www.divepowellriver.com)
Dave Tomblin from Waters Edge Dive Centre, British Columbia (www.wedivebc.com)
William Fithen from Alberta (www.thediveoutfitters.ca)
Ian Carter from Ocean Quest Adventure Resort, Newfoundland (www.oceanquestadventures.com)
Darren Fox from Ocean Legends, Hawaii (www.oceanlegends.com)
Joshua Hill from Tacoma SCUBA, Washington (www.tacomascubacenter.com)

A week of long days, hard work, impromptu debates, merciless banter, endless mugs of coffee and, oh yes, some diving too – resulted in six proud instructors deservedly graduating with International Training’s highest teaching rating – Instructor Trainer. The level of candidate preparedness for the program was extremely high and reflected their true professionalism and commitment to excellence – well done fellas.

A special thanks goes to Kathy and Scott Friesen, owners of Alpha Dive & Kayak, for hosting the program in their newly relocated Five Star Professional Development Center set in the Beach Gardens Resort, Powell River. Also, thanks to Mitchell Lepine, Western Canada Regional Manager, for organizing the program.

Scott Friesen and Ian Carter both joined the program as IT Staff Instructors, upgrading to full Instructor Trainer and are the first to make this transition. In fact it is a double for Ian, who was also the first IT Staff Instructor certified in North America after introduction of the rating, back in 2008.

The Instructor Trainer Rating is International Training’s highest teaching level and the program focuses on development of evaluation techniques in the classroom, confined water and open water. Presentation ability and skill demonstrations at instructor trainer quality are also assessed throughout the program. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may teach instructor level courses for all approved SDI, TDI and ERDI levels, including conducting the IEC portion of the SDI Open Water SCUBA Diver Instructor Course. The course is intensive and challenging but very rewarding.  International Training adopts a friendly, informal approach to the ITW and encourages a relaxed atmosphere throughout the program but also expects that all candidates will work hard to meet the challenges of the agency’s highest level of leadership training. Anyone wishing to receive further information about the future ITW programs should contact the HQ Training Department via training@tdisdi.com.
