Why is this IT Update Important?
Like any update, ITI strives to keep our members as informed as possible with: changes to standards, new materials or updated materials. This update, for the IT materials, is unique because we have taken the past year to completely revamp all the IT materials to provide better tools for developing dive professionals. The new materials are a culmination of years of conducting ITW’s and gathering the feedback from all IT’s and IT Staff Instructors on what has worked best in the field.

Why is this IT Material Update Mandatory?
As stated in the “Why is this Update Important” section – these materials are nothing like the ones you have used for years or what you were trained with during your ITW or IT Staff Instructor program. The IT manual went from 90 pages to 600 plus. The structure was changed from one manual that tried to cover all three training types (SDI, TDI, ERDI) to a designated section for each instructor program. The evaluation slates have been updated to create a better flow for in-water evaluation and to accommodate for up to eight instructor candidates. These materials are also now fully in line with all the instructor materials. With all these changes, an in-depth explanation on how to use the materials is warranted.

Why am I being Charged for the IT Material Update?
Since the first ITW we ran in 1998 we have stuck with the belief that the IT’s and now IT Staff Instructors were at the top of the list for our most loyal supports which is why we have never charged for: IT upgrades, IT updates and for IT’s attending ITW’s for refreshers. We have also always believed that the IT’s and IT Staff Instructor’s ensure the long term success of the company. This is different now, a lot of time and effort has gone into developing a set of materials that we believe will carry us for years to come and you will not have to buy additional materials to develop diving professionals in the foreseeable future. We believe that once you see these new materials you will immediately realize the value.

When is the next IT Material Update?
Our plans for the IT material Update, is to conduct them at every trade and consumer show we attend (a list of these shows can be found in the events section at and to have 6 live webinar in 2013. We also have plans to record the webinars so they can be watched anytime that fits into your schedule and we are in the process of having them conducted in multiple languages. Keep watching our professional newsletters that come out once a month for future dates as well as additional languages.

Purpose for the update
Update IT’s and IT Staff of the completely revamped IT materials that include: expanded 600+ page IT manual, revised evaluation slates, IT Resource CD, IT PowerPoint’s®, access to online IT materials. All participants will get a step-by-step update on the flow and application of the new materials and will maintain active IT and IT Staff Instructor status.

    I cannot attend the IT webinar as I am away on business.

    Also, if it is web based is it text only? We only get very limited bandwidth here in the Philippines and so maybe will not be able to participate if you use video or anything more than text – I rarely get more than a 70 Kb connection [cannot watch youtube for example].

    When will you be coming to Asia / Philippines to do the hands-on update?

    Apart from the fact that now i need to pay extra money to retain my IT status, i have been disappointed for a long time that when a search is submitted on the SDITDI site my name never turns up.
    I understand that materials cost money but i am a freelance instructor promoting TDI and this is simply a push towards other agencies.

      Thank you for the post and for expressing your concerns. We agree that TDI Instructors and IT’s have worked hard to get to where they are and should appear on our search engines. As a result, we are in the processing of changing our search criteria and soon TDI instructors and IT’s will appear on searches.

      As for the IT materials they have been a longtime coming and a year in development and testing. We believe you will be impressed with the new format and how much more powerful of a teaching tool these new materials are.

      We are always adding new times, locations and languages to the IT Material Update list to meet the needs of the members and will be releasing all these new details as they become available.

    Hi there
    Is there anything planned in Europe as the scheduled times for the webinars are not very userfriendly from our point of view (switzerland).
    Or is there any onsite presentation re. IT-material planned onsite in Europe this year (BOOT in Dusseldorf is over) and acc. to your warning “Mandatory for all Instructor Trainers and IT Staff Instructors to remain active next year”, there is in my opinion not many diving related fairs coming up ?

        Thx for the reply. If i understand correctly, there is no need at the moment to attend the US webinars and we get a downloadable version. This makes sense, as you can work through it at normal times. If i get another reminder for attending from you, i can ignore it. P.S.: I agree with your pricing policy and hope the price encloses also the actual material and not just the seminar fee (in our case, the download version). Good quality costs money and thats a fact what also we freelancers have to accept.

    Dear Brain , Sean or Anyone,

    Due to limited SDI sources in Fiji and any demand for it as resorts are PADI or SSI and despite attending IT Updates religiously I have not been able to maintain currency as an IT or , now as Instructor.
    I wish to simply pay my dues on a non-currency status (non-teaching), until course or training availability is at hand.

    I did a search for SDI Centers in Fiji and for every course there was a “NO RESULTS” posted which underline my problem and need to find a solution.

    The deal offered to me over the phone by a rep from SDI TDI to write a letter resigning as an IT and being designated as a certified Instructor instead is not fair nor deserving for the fees and expenses paid to attend in the ITC held in Maine.

    IT was a certification. It was not just some course staff position. Currency is one thing but to take away a certification? My status is non-current.

    I would like to stay within SDI in the hopes of becoming current.

    If not, then say so and I will go through the steps here to crossover to PADI. I am a lifetime NAUI member but non-current. Just for the record. NAUI 8002L.

    I hope to have my request accepted so I can pay the nominal fee per my status and not have to be forced into giving up a level designation just because I am not current.

      You are certainly welcome to renew in non-teaching status. You will not “resign” your IT Ratings, however they will continue to remain inactive until active status is regained by completing the required IT Materials Update and meeting the requirements of the Two Year Renewal/Refresher Policy as detailed in the Standards and Procedures.
