No Excuses! A Weight Loss and Fitness Journey of 2 Fat Guys

What: Seminar Presentation
Date: Thursday 11/2/17
Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Where: S320A
Who: Thomas Powell and Josh Norris

Presentation Description: The beginning of 2017 brought forth a realization that honestly needed to happen. Every day dive professionals of every type all over the world work to share scuba-related knowledge, teach the associated skills, provide a new avenue for fun, and find a new way to achieve physical fitness. Instructors at a dive shop in central North Carolina came out of the Christmas holiday recognizing that in order to tell students that fitness was essential, they themselves needed to display a level of commitment to fitness.

These instructors worked with medical professionals to ensure a safe effort was made, and proved that through diet alone, improved fitness is possible. Essentially, they discovered that almost every excuse out there was no longer valid! The old adage of “there just isn’t enough time in the day” was absolutely incorrect! The addition of planned exercise in small amounts only added to the overall benefit. Within eight months two of the instructor sin that shop lost a combined fat weight of 125 pounds and they are still working. There was a way to take a typical working day and improve your overall health without destroying your body for countless hours running or hitting the gym.

With further study, this team went on to meet with other professional divers to discover what had worked for them. Combining these knowledge sets, they will be sharing this information with anyone who wants to hear what they have achieved. The objective is to improve the overall health of the scuba community. So come out and see what they have to share. Maybe you will find something valuable you can share with your students and peers as you work to create your own change or establish your own challenges at home.

Doing it Right – Public Safety Diver Community Support

What: Seminar Presentation
Date: Friday 11/3/17
Time: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Where: S320A
Who: Thomas Powell & Italino “Tony” Pietrantonio

Presentation Description: Throughout the United States there are dive teams of all types. They come from Fire, Rescue, EMS, Law Enforcement, and even civilian groups. They work every day to assist others, learn new skills, and to become proficient at rescue and recovery. They fight for or against budget concerns, community appearance issues, training needs, and aid requests. All of this is done simply to help those in need.

If you have worked with or seen dive teams and the issues they face, you may have wondered how these problems can be overcome. To answer some of these questions, we will be discussing how to create a team, establish safe practices, gain community support, fight against known issues, establish continual training, and then maintain an effective team that can serve a community in an effective fashion. One of the largest issues teams face today is a lack of mutual aid. Recent hurricanes have shown us that working together to fix issues can help to solve horrific problems. We will show you what we have found to work and some ideas you may be able to take home and implement with teams in your region.

The objective above all for any dive team is to come home safe. If a mission can be accomplished in a manner that achieves established goals while keeping team members safe, then you have simply doubled your success. We will further discuss problems we have seen and how to improve existing situations. We look forward to seeing anyone who wishes to attend and we hope we can help you answer many of the questions you may have been struggling to answer along the team development pathway.

At least 6 of DAN’s Ten Most Wanted Improvements in Scuba Diving are covered in every entry level diving course but the problems still occur. The ugly truth is that the structure of many courses inevitably create some of these problems. In this talk Mark Powell shows how well established teaching and learning theories can explain exactly why these issues occur and more importantly what we can do to stop them. If you are an instructor you owe it to your students to find out what you can do to stop these problems occurring.
