SDI Scubility Program

Powerful & Life-Changing

Article by Joseph Glenn

Scuba diving is a life-changing experience, and for those with disabilities, it can be even more powerful. As an SDI Scubility Instructor, I’ve had the privilege of teaching individuals with different challenges how to explore the underwater world confidently. This program is about much more than diving, it’s about breaking barriers, building confidence, and giving people a chance to experience true freedom beneath the surface.

My connection to Scubility runs deep. My father was born with polio, and growing up, I saw firsthand the challenges that came with living with a disability. Those experiences gave me a deep respect for resilience and determination. That’s why teaching scuba diving to people with disabilities holds such a special place in my heart. I know the value of creating opportunities for people who might otherwise feel limited, and I’m proud to be part of a program that empowers them to achieve something incredible.

One of the most meaningful moments in my career as an instructor came when I worked with a friend from the fire department. Before his accident, I had taught him to dive, but after a serious car wreck left him paralyzed, we faced a whole new journey together. Teaching him to return to the water and rediscover the joy of diving was an experience I’ll never forget. Watching his determination and excitement reminded me why I became a Scubility Instructor in the first place. The program changes lives!!!

Becoming an SDI Instructor is about more than teaching people how to dive; it’s about opening doors to new possibilities. As instructors, we have the privilege of creating life-changing moments, whether for a student with a disability or for anyone chasing their dream of becoming a diver. The skills you develop, the people you meet, and the opportunities to inspire others make this one of the most rewarding paths in scuba diving education.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming an SDI Instructor, or specifically a Scubility Instructor, there’s no better time to take that step. You’ll not only gain the ability to share your passion for diving but also have the chance to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

Teaching scuba is about more than skills and certifications, it’s about empowerment, connection, and community. And when you see the smile on a student’s face as they take their first breaths underwater, you’ll know exactly why this journey is worth it.
