Join Jeffrey Bozanic on the Shag Rocks & Antarctica Expedition

An Invitation to Make Diving History

Article by Jeffrey Bozanic

At SDI/TDI, we take pride in supporting our diving family as they push the boundaries of what is possible in exploration, science, and adventure. Today, we’re excited to share an unprecedented opportunity with our community: a chance to join Jeffrey Bozanic (SDI/TDI #33)—renowned polar diver, scientist, and author—on the first-ever diving expedition at Shag Rocks, continuing to Antarctica.

This is not just another trip. It is an Explorers Club Flag Expedition, a recognition reserved only for projects of true scientific and exploratory significance. And you have the chance to be part of it.

Why This Expedition Matters

Shag Rocks, a remote cluster of islets in the South Atlantic, have never before been explored by scuba divers. Rising sharply from the ocean floor, these waters are entirely undocumented. For the first time, divers will record observations, collect data, and bring to light marine ecosystems unknown to science.

Alongside Jeff and the expedition team, you’ll contribute directly to research ranging from underwater ecological surveys to microplastic sampling and seabird monitoring. Even if you don’t dive, your participation in topside citizen science will make a tangible difference.

A Pathway Into the Explorers Club

As part of this expedition, every participant who contributes to the scientific program—whether above or below the surface—will become eligible for membership in The Explorers Club, joining the ranks of history’s great adventurers and scientists. Few opportunities offer this kind of recognition and connection.

Diving Standards & Limited Slots

For those who want to dive, strict standards ensure both safety and readiness:

  • Drysuit certification
  • At least 30 logged drysuit dives
  • At least two dives in water colder than 40°F/4°C
  • Approval from the expedition divemasters

Please note: only four diving slots are available. They will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’ve ever dreamed of making history underwater, this is your moment.

Everyone Has a Role

Not a diver? No problem. There are no limits to the number of non-diving participants, and every role—data collection, bird surveys, microplastics research, or general support—is critical to the expedition’s success.

Practical Details

This is a self-funded expedition; all participants are responsible for covering their own travel and expedition expenses.

This is your chance to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow explorers, to contribute to groundbreaking science, and to dive (literally or figuratively) into one of the most remote and uncharted corners of our planet.

Make history with us. Explore. Discover. Contribute.
