Brylske, Ocean Education International Partners with SDI

News Release – Oct. 21, 2025

Scuba Diving International is excited to announce a partnership with famed author Dr. Alex Brylske, who will lead SDI’s environmental conservation initiatives. Founded in 1994, SDI features a global presence in over 100 countries and stands as one of the world’s largest and most respected diving certification organizations.

The partnership will include course materials for SDI’s industry-leading eLearning educational platform and informative blog articles and news releases that alert the diving community on matters related to environmental education.

“Partnering with Alex is a natural extension of the love we all have for the oceans and the underwater world,” said SDI CEO Brian Carney. “Together, we’re not just raising awareness; we’re renewing our promise to care for what we all love. Working with Alex allows us to blend science and storytelling in service of the environment we all depend on.”

Brylske is a renowned creator of countless diving and marine education programs, author of several books, and has penned more than 300 articles over his nearly six decades as a diver. His unique and diverse background combines a successful academic career with a long, highly respected tenure in the dive industry.

“I have admired what Brian and Stephanie have done with SDI since taking over in 2004, and I have always been eager to find a project where we might collaborate,” said Brylske. “Fortunately, the launch of Clear Currents was the perfect opportunity. My limited experience here has also confirmed my long-held belief about the organization: that it is possible for an innovative and successful company to still retain—for the staff and membership alike—a sense of belonging to a family.”

In 2019, Brylske retired as a Professor of Marine Science at the College of the Florida Keys. There, he developed and taught numerous field-based courses in tropical marine science, served as CFK’s AAUS Dive Safety Officer, and directed their Scientific Diver Program. After retiring, he founded Ocean Education International, a consultancy specializing in environmental education and sustainable marine tourism.

Brylske is a recipient of NOAA’s Walter B. Jones Memorial Excellence Award for Ocean and Coastal Resource Management and was named the 2012 DAN/Rolex Diver of the Year. His latest book, Beneath the Blue Planet: A Diver’s Guide to the Ocean, was recently published by Reef Smart Guides, where he serves as Director of Education.

Bryske will be presenting several seminars at DEMA 2025 (Nov. 11-14), including a session for SDI on Teaching Mindfully on Wednesday morning at 11:00am. To register for his session, click here.
