SDI Scubility Inactive Diver/Refresher Course

The SDI Scubility Inactive Diver Program is designed to update and review the knowledge and skill level of an inactive diver. SDI encourages the use of this program for Instructors, Assistant Instructors, and Resorts or Dive Facilities that have questions regarding the diving history of an individual. This program can also be used as a catalyst for continuing education programs.

Who this course is for:

  • The individual with mental or physical disabilities who holds the SDI Scubility Open Water Scuba Diver certification, or higher who wishes to refresh their diving skills after a period of inactivity

Course prerequisites:

  • Minimum age 18, 10 with parental consent
  • Show proof of SDI Scubility Open Water Diver certification card, or equivalent

What you can expect to learn:

The SDI Scubility Inactive Diver/Refresher Course takes an in-depth look at all of the following and more:

  • Physics and physiology
    • Buoyancy
    • Pressure
    • Gas spaces
  • Scuba equipment assembly
    • Mask, fins, and snorkel
    • Exposure protection
    • Buoyancy compensator device
    • Weight systems/weight placement
    • Regulators
    • Cylinders
    • Underwater instruments
    • Underwater communications
  • Accessories
    • Dive flag
    • Rescue signal
    • Knife or cutting device
  • Planning your dive
    • Diver fitness and overexertion
    • Buddy system
    • First aid

Some of the required skills you will have to demonstrate include:

  • Weight system adjustment with proper weighting
  • Pre-dive check of self and buddy
  • Mask clearing; partial and full at depth
  • Buoyancy compensator device (BCD) use:
    • Inflation and deflation (auto inflation) at the surface
    • Inflation and deflation (auto inflation) at depth
  • Buoyancy control
    • Controlled ascents
    • Controlled descents
  • Regulator use
    • Breathing, clearing, and recovery at the surface
    • Breathing, clearing, and recovery at depth
  • Computer (PDC) and gauges use; reading and understanding data
  • Underwater communications
  • Underwater swimming; proper use of fins or webbed gloves
